Hair transplant surgery is a procedure aimed at restoring hair growth in areas of the scalp where hair loss or thinning has occurred. There are two main techniques used in hair transplant surgery: Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Both techniques involve harvesting healthy hair follicles from a donor area of the scalp and implanting them into recipient sites where hair growth is desired. Here's an overview of each technique:
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT):
- In FUT, also known as the strip method, a strip of scalp tissue containing hair follicles is surgically removed from the donor area, typically from the back or sides of the scalp where hair is genetically resistant to balding (known as the donor zone).
- The donor strip is then dissected under a microscope to separate individual follicular units, which contain one to four hair follicles each.
- Small incisions, known as recipient sites, are made in the recipient area of the scalp where hair transplantation is desired.
- The dissected follicular units are carefully implanted into the recipient sites, with attention to the angle, direction, and density of hair growth to achieve natural-looking results.
- The donor site incision is closed with sutures or staples, leaving a linear scar that is typically concealed by surrounding hair.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE):
- In FUE, individual follicular units are harvested directly from the donor area of the scalp using a small, specialized instrument called a micro-punch or a motorized punch.
- The surgeon creates tiny circular incisions around each follicular unit, isolating them from the surrounding tissue.
- Once harvested, the follicular units are then carefully implanted into the recipient sites using a similar technique as in FUT.
- FUE does not involve the removal of a strip of scalp tissue, resulting in smaller, scattered scars in the donor area that are less noticeable compared to FUT.
- FUE may be preferred for patients who prefer to wear their hair short or who have a limited donor supply, as it allows for more precise harvesting and minimal scarring.
Both FUT and FUE techniques can achieve natural-looking and long-lasting results when performed by a skilled and experienced hair transplant surgeon. The choice between FUT and FUE depends on various factors, including the patient's hair loss pattern, scalp laxity, donor supply, and personal preferences. The 1000 units represent the minimum services for patient that don't have a lot of hair loss. Because of the high cost of FUE or FUT services, some clinics make a difference between 1000 grafts or 4000 grats or more for instance while others offer a package service.
Latvia has more than 150 clinics and hospitals and they cover almost all types of treatments. Dermatology and plastic surgery are often the most sought treatments. All main clinics are located in Riga.
