About the history of the UKE Hospitals
The UKE was solemnly inaugurated on May 17, 1889 as the New General Hospital (NAK) in Hamburg-Eppendorf. It was founded on the initiative of Heinrich Curschmann, who in 1879 was appointed Medical Director of the then only General Hospital in St. Georg. The UKE is located at MARTINISTRASSE 52 20246 HAMBURG.
One of the oldest Hospitals of the City
With more than 10,000 employees, UKE is the third largest employer of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Around 2,600 of them are physicians and researchers, more than 3,200 nurses and therapists. The UKE has more than 1,720 beds together with its University Heart Center Hamburg and the Martini-Klinik.
Largest Hospital of the country?
Presently, the UKE comprises more than 80 clinics and institutes in 13 centers. More than 10,400 people work in the UKE. Every year, the hospital takes in about 94,000 inpatients. There are also 335,000 outpatients, of which around 127,000 are in the emergency department. This makes the UKE one of the largest hospitals in Hamburg. In addition, about 3,700 students study medicine and dentistry at UKE.
