European Institute of Oncology was inaugurated on 30th-May-1994, by Umberto Veronesi with the objective of establishing a ground-breaking model of hospital, which applied the principles of private management to public health.
In 1994, the scientific committee of the institute was born, which involved some of the most prominent names in global oncology, such as two Nobel Prize winners, Renato Dulbecco (Nobel Prize for Medicine 1975) and J. Michael Bishop (Nobel Prize for Medicine 1989). In anticipation of the 1998 legislation, the Institute structured its personal Ethical Team organized according to the most advanced criteria. IEO turn into the coordinating center of the central ongoing researches in the country in the area of oncology, predominantly in breast cancer.
The International Office was created with the objective of accommodating Patients visiting the European Institute of Oncology from around the world. The International Office provides a single point of access, service and coordination for international patients and their families, providing personalized services before, during and after admission, for patients visiting the hospital from nations outside Italy. From handling medical consultations and hospital admissions to travel and hotel arrangements, IEO employees are dedicated to provide convenience for international patients and their families, making them feel comfortable all through their stay.
Clinical trial in IEO is a scientific exploration involving patient’s behavior, to identify specific responses to new treatments/measures, or fresh techniques to execute known treatments. Clinical trials advance IEO knowledge and progress in the battle against numerous illnesses.
Currently, the best effective treatments are the product of extensive clinical trials that regularly recommend new directions for future research. IEO has continuously been engaging in clinical trial management, often in collaboration with many prominent international Organizations.
In 2002, the Institute was evaluated by the Joint Commission International (JCI) and received an accreditation, the respected American agency accrediting North American hospitals since 1953 in accordance with the highest standards of quality existing in health care. IEO was the first non-US cancer center to obtain the prestigious accreditation.
