The reproductive assisted techniques have been highly improved in the last decades, and In Vitro Fertilization is not the exception. In fact, this technique is very commonly used and the rates of success have considerably improved nowadays.
Likewise, although In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is not the first technique to be used in all couples that want to achieve pregnancy, it can help a lot of people with moderate to severe fertility problems.
WHAT IS THE IN VITRO FERTILIZATION – IVF CONSULTATION?
As in every assisted reproduction technique, couples that undergo an IVF must have certain visits with the fertility specialist to determine some basic aspects of the procedure and to achieve a greater understanding between the doctor and the couple.
According to Genetics and IVF Institute, among the most important aspects that must be decided during an IVF consultation, the possibility of success using this technique, the specific technique that will be used to produce the fertilization, the best time to perform it and even understanding the preparation process that the couple must follow before the procedure to guarantee the highest possible rate of success can be included.
During an IVF consultation, the doctor will indicate all the tests needed to determine the infertility cause and other tests to check the couples’ general health status. Likewise, the medical and sexual history of each member of the couple will be filled in order to discard any possible cause of infertility.
Some image tests can be requested by the doctor to check the reproductive system of both the man and the woman. The first test requested by the specialist is usually the ecosonogram, and if it is not enough, other image tests may be needed.
It is always important to consult a fertility specialist or a qualified fertility center to determine the best way of treatment for each couple. Likewise, it is very important to feel confidence and trust in the fertility team, so a couple can undergo to different IVF consultations before selecting a specialist or a center to undergo the procedure.
WHAT IS AN IN VITRO FERTILIZATION PROCEDURE?
The In Vitro Fertilization is a reproduction assisted technique that consists in making the fecundation process easier by artificially producing the union between an ovum and spermatozoa in a lab. This is why it is called "In Vitro", which in Latin means inside the glass.
HOW IS AN IN VITRO FERTILIZATION PROCEDURE PERFORMED?
Once the couple has decided to undergo this procedure, the specialist starts the ovarian stimulation. During this stage, one ovum is stimulated (as it naturally occurs) to produce many oocytes and to obtain as many embryos as possible.
In order to produce the ovarium stimulation, the woman must undergo daily hormonal injections, current blood tests and ecosonograms to verify the proper development of the ovarium follicles. Once the follicles have reached the ideal size, the woman receives a new injection to mature the follicles and obtain them by an ovarium puncture.
The puncture is considered an invasive procedure, so it is always performed while the patient is sedated. However, it usually takes 15 minutes and is an outpatient procedure. The ova can be obtained from the patient or a donor.
After obtaining the ova, the fertilization per se is performed. The fertilization stage can be produced by 2 techniques, the FIV (Conventional In Vitro Fertilization) and the ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection).
The FIV consists in placing the spermatozoa of the partner or a donor in a culture plate and the spermatozoa enters the ovum like they do in the natural fecundation process. On the other hand, the ICSI technique consists in introducing the spermatozoa inside the ovum through a direct injection, so all the fecundation process is artificial.
In both cases, the obtained embryos are maintained in a culture plate and once they have the proper size and maturation degree, they are transferred from the plate to the woman uterus to continue with the pregnancy procedure in a natural way. In most cases, the embryos are genetically studied before their transfer to the woman's uterus to discard any genetic disease that could alter the proper development of the pregnancy.
HOW MUCH DOES AN IVF CONSULTATION AND TREATMENT COSTS?
Usually, any reproductive assisted procedure is expensive, and due to how specific an In Vitro Fertilization procedure is, it is usually more expensive than others. However, undergoing the procedure in a good center always increases the opportunity of achieving pregnancy (please follow the link to read more on IVF Treatment, What You Should Know Before Going Abroad)
Likewise, the IVF cost can widely vary according to the technique that is used to perform the fertilization per se, the need of using donors, the number of cycles required to achieve pregnancy, among others.
