On the other hand, the World Health Organization (WHO) classifies the spermatozoa motility in grades (from a to d) according to the velocity which the spermatozoa swim forward. The grade “d” corresponds to sperms that do not move at all (immotile).

WHAT IS THE INTRACITOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION OR ICSI?

The intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) can be defined as an assisted reproductive technique used to facilitate the fertilization properly said during an in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure (please follow the link to read more on In vitro fertilization IVF).

The ICSI consists on injecting a single sperm, previously studied and selected, in a mature oocyte (ovum) to simulate the natural fertilization process.

WHAT IS THE RELATION BETWEEN ABSOLUTELY IMMOTILE SPERMATOZOA AND INTRACYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION?

There is a very important relation between absolutely immotile spermatozoa and intracytoplasmic sperm injection because this assisted reproductive technique allows to fertilize an oocyte even when the spermatozoa has no motility at all.

It is possible because, as it was said before, during the ICSI procedure the spermatozoa is directly injected in the ovum, so as long as it is a healthy sperm, the ability to move by itself is not required.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN IN-VITRO FERTILIZATION AND INTRACYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION?

The difference between in vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection is that the first one refers to the entire assisted reproductive technique that involves the extraction of the oocyte from the female ovary, its artificial fertilization and later, its introduction into the uterus when it is an embryo.

Conversely, the intracytoplasmic sperm injection is one of the techniques used to produce the artificial oocyte fertilization during an assisted reproductive procedure, especially, the in vitro fertilization.

DOES INTRACYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION WORK?

As other reproduction assisted procedures, the intracytoplasmic sperm injection has a percentage of success that usually increases with each cycle of treatment. In fact, some studies show that although the rate of pregnancies in the first attempt of ICSI is 0, in the subsequent cycles (especially third and fourth) 51.7% of the couples achieved a successful pregnancy when using an immotile spermatozoa.
