Alpha-arbutin is a natural derivative of hydroquinone, a commonly used skin-lightening agent. It is derived from the bearberry plant and is believed to inhibit melanin production in the skin, leading to a lighter complexion. Alpha-arbutin is often found in skincare products and supplements marketed for skin whitening.

In some skin whitening tablets, it is often associated with glutathione and vitamin C.
