What is Dental Implant in Portugal

A dental implant is a prosthetic device used to replace missing teeth by surgically inserting an artificial tooth root into the jawbone. Dental implants provide a stable foundation for attaching artificial teeth, such as crowns, dental bridges, or dentures, restoring function, aesthetics, and confidence for patients with missing teeth.

The process begins with an initial consultation with a dentist or oral surgeon who specializes in dental implantology. During this consultation, most often online and based to an x-ray sent by email or Whatsapp most of the time, the dentist or dental implant specialist will perform a comprehensive examination of the patient's oral health, including evaluating the condition of the jawbone, gums and remaining teeth

Based on the examination findings and the patient's goals, the dental provider will develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to the individual needs of the patient. This plan may include determining the number and location of implants needed, assessing the quality and quantity of available bone for implant placement, and selecting the appropriate type of implants and restorations.

In practice most discussion will be focused on dental implant units or several implants needed and "grouped" as all on 4 or all on 6 dental implant systems.

Tip: don't focus on the sole price of the dental implant but check what is the dental implant brand provided and most importantly ask for the dental implant abutment, the temporary crown and permanent crow that go with it.

What matters is to understand each case, if you have a lack of bone, if you have a gum issue, if you have an infection, if you have a parodontia etc In cases where the jawbone lacks sufficient volume or density to support dental implants, bone grafting or augmentation procedures may be recommended to rebuild or augment the bone structure. These procedures involve transplanting bone tissue from another part of the body or using bone grafting materials to enhance bone volume and density in the implant site.

After implant placement, the patient undergoes a healing period, during which the implants fuse with the surrounding bone tissue through a process called osseointegration. This integration process typically takes several months, during which the patient's bone gradually grows and integrates around the implant, providing a strong and stable foundation for the artificial tooth restoration. This phase is often skiped when one chooses an immediate loading protocol.Once osseointegration is complete, the patient returns to the dental provider's office for placement of the abutments, which are small connector pieces that attach to the top of the implants. Abutments serve as the interface between the implants and the artificial teeth (crowns, bridges, or dentures) and are customized to fit the patient's specific restoration.

After the abutments are placed, impressions or digital scans of the implant sites are taken to create custom-made artificial teeth that fit securely and blend seamlessly with the patient's natural teeth. The artificial teeth, such as crowns, bridges, or dentures, are fabricated in a dental laboratory according to the patient's specifications and aesthetic preferences. Once the restorations are ready, they are securely attached to the abutments, completing the dental implant treatment.

A dental implant offers a reliable and long-lasting solution for replacing missing teeth and restoring oral function and aesthetics. A dental implant means nothing in itself as you need to add an abutment and above a temporary crown and after a permanent crown, generally in zirconium.

So the final cost of an implant depends of many factors but also in what country you do it and if it shall be combined with other implants such as an all on four dental implant solution. Check for each dental implant: what is the country, what is the dental implant brand provided, costs of temporary crown and permanent crown and the rest...dental implant abutment, x-ray, consultation, extraction and various services.

Dental Implant in Portugal additional services

I am looking for dental implants in Portugal but I need to understand what goes with it, what is the final price and related services. Here you will see that a dental implant is not only a screw, a brand but far more as you need to add dentist services, a temporary crown above and later a permanent crown.

What are the advantages of doing dental implants in Portugal?

Portugal is very well reputed for the quality of its dental services. There are several dental universities close to the capital of the country and this is where most dentists come from in the country. There is a combination of high level dental services and a steady pricing policy since many years.

Often rated as best country in the world for dental treatment, Portugal leads dental implant solutions having invented the all on 4 dental system or the Malo system.

What are dental implants in Portugal?

Dental implants, these sleek and sophisticated screws crafted from titanium or zirconium oxide, aren't just your average hardware.

Think of them as undercover agents—they disguise themselves as artificial tooth roots but once they're in, they seamlessly blend with the surrounding bone, becoming one with the body. Now, when things aren't quite right and there's not enough bone to cozy up to, that's when the dental surgeons step in. They're like the architects, performing bone grafting acrobatics to ensure these implants find their solid footing. Whether it's beefing up the bone structure or linking implants to the maxillary sinuses, they've got it covered, turning dental implants into masterpieces of stability and comfort.

How much for a dental implants? Cost break down explained in Portugal

A dental implant cost depends of first its brand. Each dental implant dentist usually have its own unique brand. Why? Because with a dental implant brand you need many additional tools around the implant and its different references. So you will get a quote for one standard or one branded implant in general. You can then ask for a specific brand to your dentist if necessary.

The protocol in Porto will influence your dental implant so you should enquire.

The cost of a dental implant does not come alone. Having a sole dental implant means nothing as you need to add dental services to go with it. You shall add to the dental implant cost:

  • Implantologist consultation
  • Various xrays
  • A temporary dental crown
  • A permanent dental crown (usually in metal with ceramics or zirconium)
  • The abutment or device that will enable to fix what shall be above the implant
  • Additional services such as dental extraction, bone craft when necessary

So pay attention when you see the gross price of a dental implant you have to double the price in average to get all what goes with it!

If you need dental bridges, all on 4 or all on 6 you will have to take that into account. An all on 4 does not mean you need 12 dental implants if you have 12 dental crowns above, the calculation is different.

What is the required protocol in Portugal for a dental implant?

A dentist needs an x-ray in order to know where and how to insert your future dental implants. Therefore it is required to have a consultation (we recommend video consultation through Whatsapp for instance, most of our dental clinics offer that for free) and then have or ask a prescription to get an x-ray.

The time taken to put a dental implant is fast as it requires few minutes only provided you donnot need a tooth extraction or root extraction. What will matter is to add the abutment and the temporary crown above.

The recommend protocol and steps are:

Step 1: online video consultation based on your x-ray

Step 2: dental extraction if necessary, insert your dental implant, abutment + temporary crown

Step 3: permanent crown (zirconium is recommended) once the dental Laboratory will have made it usually 3 to 5 months after step 2.

Dentists in Portugal, what you need to know

►► read more about dental implants, all on 4 and dental crowns in Portugal.

Dentists in Portugal generally have good training, and some are among the best as they have invented the all on 4 dental implant system and keep innovating with Bone Easy™. Thanks to the various training courses provided by the country, dentists, whether in Lisbon, Porto or elsewhere, have a good level of general training. It is not just a few isolated dentists who are opening up to dental tourism but real practitioners with perfect mastery of both periodontics and all that the market offers in terms of dental implants and other prosthetic solutions.

Porto concentrates more specialists than Lisbon and in general the Portuguese, unless they cannot do otherwise, like foreigners, do not hesitate to go to Porto in general.

Time and its management is generally the best advice we can recommend to you regarding dental choice. Indeed the dental office must integrate a competent team of dentists who preferably use material internally when it comes to dental implant or even veneers.

We therefore recommend that you first note in your dental care quote in Portugal all the necessary details, including the number of round trips required and the length of stays each time.

Portugal treats all the above cases with utmost meticulousness and standard procedures.

On the other hand Portugal has a very structured and impressive educational system for medical sciences with good research and development that uses state of the art equipment to train its students. The education system makes it fun for medical tourism to develop in the country considering the fact that it takes lots of investment from the Portuguese government. Some of the medical schools in Portugal are listed below; Nova Medical School, University of Lisbon, University of Coimbra, university of Porto, university Minho, institute of hygiene and tropical medicine, university of Algarve, school of dental medicine(Lisbon) and university of Aveiro.

Why I shall consider Portugal for my dental implants, and the all-on-4 that goes with them?

Portugal is a suitable place for medical tourism and treatment because of the way it is constructed, the beaches and other beautiful places are just minutes away from each other which makes way for easy accessibility.

The medical infrastructure with modern equipment that will stun you and readily make your treatment and medical tourism worth the while is very present in the country of Portugal.  Waiting list is very reduced in Portugal especially in the case of emergency.

World Health Organization attests that Portuguese medical care system is well above average and the life expectancy is considerably high in Portugal.

Portuguese doctors are trained by very demanding medical schools which makes them very skillful at delivering a world class treatment to tourists.

The country is also blessed with places that readily aid recovery such as spas, beaches, relaxation centers with modern equipment and very loving, warm and friendly workers.

Medical tourism in Portugal is very well affordable and all treatments remain superbly standard even as affordable as the fees may be.

Portugal is becoming a key destination in terms of dental tourism with well rated IDC clinic in Porto but also Dental Clinics such as Estudio Oral in Porto that provides dental implants and Cerec Veneers Treatments, Prelada Clinic, Clinica Projetamos Sorisos or Oral Klass Clinic.

Hospital Cuf or SNS Hospital cover also a large range of medical treatments while some clinic are well specialized such as Clinic Condé in plastic Surgery or Replace in hair restoration.

Should you need to chose a location first for your dental implants or all on 4 dental solutions we would advise more Porto than Lisbon. Porto offers a wider range of dental clinics with the same level of specialist but for a better price.

In addition some dental clinics provide a faster service.

It means that when you have to chose a dental clinic in Portugal, the price is not the only criteria, time is of the essence for most patient. Indeed in some dental clinics you may need more than 5 appointments for an all on 4.

So when choosing your dental clinic for your all on 4 or dental implant please consider the price but ask the lenght of stay.

Is it worth travelling to Portugal for my dental implants? Just check and compare

A dental implant costs on average less than 500€ in Portugal. The best offers are in Porto, around 450 euros for a titanium implant.

The implant is not enough, you need to add + zirconium dental crown + temporary crown + services.

The reference price is rarely the dental implant itself, in Portugal we talk about several dental implants for each case and in particular all-on-4 dental implants per jaw.

Traveling to Portugal becomes interesting from a single dental implant compared to Switzerland, France, Benelux or Canada for example.

With the same quality and the best, for example an all on 4 for a jaw with 4 titanium dental implants + dental extractions + root extractions + radios and consultations + 12 temporary dental crowns + 12 zirconium dental crowns.

The price of the all on 4 with zirconium will be between 18,500 eur and 25,500 eur in France, between 19,400 eur and 27,500 eur in Belgium, the double in Canada or Switzerland. It will be around 21,000 GBP in the UK, 35,000 USD in New York for example.

In Portugal in Europe with equivalent services and quality (or often very superior) your all on 4 dental system will be around 7000€.

You have to subtract the flight and about 6 to 7 nights of hotel accommodation depending on the protocols, but the saving will be between 13,000 USD and 52,000 USD per jaw depending on where you come from.

Please note that zirconium crowns are so expensive in countries where dental implants are the most expensive that we often offer crowns with a metal base covered with ceramic. This is very different in time and aesthetics from zirconium and therefore the basis for comparison will be different than in Portugal dental offices use almost only zirconium. However, the savings will be double and the same if you use crowns for immediate loading if you only want to make one trip.

Most future patients look first for dental implant in general and after for all on 4 in various countries while some check before after photos of all on 4 procedure.

In terms of classical dental tourism, most people look for an all on 4 dental treatment in Mexico when they are US based or an all on 4 v in Thailand when they are around Asia. As for Europe and around they look for an all on 4 dental treatment in Europe or more specifically for an all on 4 dental treatment in Hungary, all on 4 dental treatment in Spain that are classical destination but also  all on 4 v in France or all on 4 dental treatment in Belgium but many check often an all on 4 dental treatment in Poland or an all on 4 dental treatment in Romania in terms of pricing policies. Some other EU countries have also good all on 4 offers such as all on 4 dental treatment in Germany, all on 4 dental treatment in Italy but also cheap all on 4 offers such as all on 4 dental treatment in Turkey or all on 4 dental treatment in Egypt.

If you want to go deeper into your all on 4 or all on 6 search, you have to check dental crowns and dental implants as part of them.

So if someone is looking for an all on 4 dental treatment in Portugal, he or she will look for a dental implant dental treatment in Portugal and a dental crown in Portugal, same for a dental implant dental treatment in Hungary with a dental crown in Hungary. So if you look for an all on 4 in Spain you shall look for a dental implant in Spain and a dental crown in Spain otherwise it will not make sense. Implants or crowns alone mean nothing as for each tooth (except the all on 4 system) you need to have an extraction (most of the time) with a dental implant, an abutment and a crown above it.

Compare pricing between an all on 4 versus an all on 6 dental treatment in Turkey, all on 4 versus an all on 6 dental treatment in Portugal, all on 4 in Belgium versus an all on 6 dental treatment in Belgium or even  check all on 6 dental treatment in Germany, all on 6 dental treatment in Spain, all on 6 dental treatment in Mexico or all on 6 dental treatment in Thailand with help you to get an informed choice.
