What is All-on-4 Dental Implant in Greece

The "All-on-4" dental implants (or "all on 6" when 6 implants are necessary) is a dental procedure used to restore a full arch of missing teeth using only four dental implants to support a raw of 10 or 12 crowns instead of many unit implants with above crown. This innovative approach allows patients with extensive tooth loss or those facing the prospect of full-mouth extractions to regain a functional and aesthetically pleasing smile.

The protocol for "All-on-4" dental implants starts by a Consultation: The process begins with a comprehensive consultation with a qualified prosthodontist or oral surgeon who specializes in dental implant procedures. During this consultation, the dentist will evaluate your oral health, discuss your treatment goals, and determine if you are a suitable candidate for "All-on-4" implants. It is nowadays most of time done remote. You don't need to come to different dental clinics for consultation and waist hours. You just have to send your x-ray or your documentation in order to receive various quotes. Nowadays dentists are used to prepare and send remote by Whatsapp or email dental quotes. Having an x-ray is mandatory unless you have a quote from another dentist or if the protocol is simple (you need a full mouth restoration for 1 or 2 jaws). You will note that if in the dental clinic premises the protocol might change (ie a dental crown is enough and no implant is necessary or if you need 3 implants and a bridge and not 1 implants, this will only change the final cost but not the protocol as a well organized dental clinic with its own lab shall be able to treat the same day 1 implant or a full mouth restoration (so 8 implants and 24 temporary dental crowns).

Your dental quote will be based on the consultation (very often remote through Whatsapp video for instance) and diagnostic imaging (such as X-rays, CT scans, or 3D imaging), the dentist will develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. This plan will include the number and placement of implants, as well as the design of the final prosthesis.

In some cases (10% of cases) preparatory procedures are required before implant placement. This could include tooth extractions, bone grafting to augment bone volume in areas of bone deficiency, or treatment for gum disease. Surgery day protocol:Implant placement: On the day of surgery, the dentist will surgically place four dental implants into the jawbone at strategic locations to maximize support and stability for the final prosthesis. The implants are typically tilted posteriorly to take advantage of available bone and avoid the need for bone grafting in many cases.Temporary prosthesis: Following implant placement, a temporary prosthesis may be attached to the implants to restore function and aesthetics while the implants integrate with the jawbone (a process called osseointegration). This temporary prosthesis allows patients to eat and speak comfortably during the healing period, which typically lasts several months.Healing and osseointegration: Over the next few months, the implants will fuse with the surrounding bone, providing a stable foundation for the final prosthesis. During this time, regular follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor healing and ensure optimal implant integration.Final prosthesis fabrication: Once osseointegration is complete and the implants have become fully integrated with the jawbone, the dentist will take impressions of the implants and surrounding tissues to fabricate the final prosthesis. Prosthesis placement: The final prosthesis is securely attached to the implants, restoring a full arch of teeth and providing a natural-looking smile that functions like natural teeth. The dentist will ensure that the prosthesis fits comfortably and functions properly before finalizing the treatment.

There is a second "all on 4" protocol involving only 1 trip instead of 2. In the standard above mentioned protocol, you usually do the same day the extractions + implants + temporary crowns and then come back around 5 months for about 5 days for the permanent crowns.

For those who come from far away you can have the all on four immediate loading protocol meaning you will do directly the permanent crowns and skip the temporary crowns. The pro is that you save time. The cons is that it is in average +20% more expensive, the dental crowns cannot be in zirconium but in a specific ceramic type and in some cases there can be a gum problem.

"All-on-4 dental" implants offer a minimally invasive and cost-effective solution for restoring a full arch of missing teeth, providing patients with a durable, stable, and aesthetically pleasing smile that can significantly improve their quality of life.

All-on-4 Dental Implant in Greece additional services

I need to change my teeth but I don't know where to start? I need to have dental implants and dental crowns but do I need a dental bridge, a dental implant system called “all on 4” or “all on 6”? It's about understanding if I need an all on 4 dental implant system but also what comes with it i.e. tooth extractions, titanium dental implants and dental crowns of different types.

Why having “all on 4” dental implants in Greece?

In the main cities you can find different types of dental care services offering all on 4. For this you need a dental clinic meeting several criteria such as a dental laboratory where the mixed ceramic or zirconium dental crowns will be manufactured but also a specialist in dental implants, a dentist who will extract your teeth and another who will install temporary or permanent crowns. Once all these criteria are met, you will be able to have the right service for your “all on 4”.

What is an all on four dental implant?

The system called “all on 4” is a dental implant system allowing an entire row of 12 dental crowns to rest on just 4 implants.

Unlike traditional dentures, which may require one implant for each missing tooth, the All-on-4 uses four dental implants to support a fixed full denture for one jaw.

This method is often used for people who have lost most or all of their teeth in one jaw, and it offers several advantages, including better functionality and aesthetics, as well as better retention and stability compared to removable dentures. Additionally, it can often be performed in a single surgical procedure, reducing healing time and representing a significant cost savings.

According to the protocol, you can come out at the end of the day with all your new teeth on each of your jaws. We will have extracted the remaining teeth, placed 4 implants per jaw and put 12 temporary or permanent dental crowns according to the protocol.

Why having all on 4 dental implants and dental crowns in the country?

The country's major cities boast top-tier dental services offering cutting-edge "all on 4" dental implant systems. What stands out is the country's embrace of:

Expertise and Superior Care: Renowned dental health professionals and facilities specializing in advanced dental procedures, notably dental implants, ensure high-quality treatment.

Innovative Technology: Dental clinics nationwide are equipped with state-of-the-art medical advancements, guaranteeing advanced and top-notch dental procedures.

Convenient Access: The country's easy accessibility makes it a prime choice for international patients seeking dental care. Moreover, dental clinics extend support services to foreign patients, including language aid and travel arrangements.

Safety and Hygiene Assurance: Upholding stringent safety and hygiene standards, the medical facilities ensure a secure environment for all dental procedures.

What are the main advantages of having an all on 4 dental implant in my mouth?

Improved Stability: By using four implants to support a complete denture, this method provides increased stability compared to removable dentures, allowing the patient to eat and speak more comfortably.

Fewer Surgical Procedures: Compared to other techniques requiring a greater number of implants, All-on-4 can often be performed in a single surgical procedure, reducing healing and adaptation time. Where before, for example, it took you several days to put 11 implants and therefore 11 fixing devices on the dental crowns then 11 temporary or permanent dental crowns, you now only have 4 implants to put.

Saving time and money: By reducing the number of implants needed, the costs associated with surgery and restoration can be less, and the time required to complete treatment can be reduced.

Improved Comfort: All-on-4 fixed dentures provide increased comfort compared to removable dentures because they are permanently fixed in the mouth and do not need to be removed for cleaning or overnight. It is therefore also a question of improving one’s hygiene and comfort of life.

Aesthetic and functional restoration: This technique restores the natural appearance of teeth and offers functionality similar to that of natural teeth, allowing the patient to regain a better quality of life.

Reduced bone loss: Implants stimulate the jaw bone, which can help prevent bone loss and maintain facial structure.

A permanent solution, often for life. While it is difficult to say that everything will last a lifetime for a patient, it is a long-lasting system that does not require maintenance since everything is devitalized.

How much for an all on four in the country? Costs breakdowns

The price of an all on 4 in the country depends on different factors in addition to the remuneration of the laboratory manufacturing the dental prostheses, that of the dentists installing them, the brand of dental implant or the services of the dentist specializing in dental implants.

You will need to check the following elements in your final price of “all on 4”:

- The price of dental crowns manufactured in the dental clinic laboratory or subcontracted to a laboratory: you will need to count 12 temporary dental crowns, their installation and then the price of the permanent dental crowns. The price of dental crowns comes in at around 40% of the final price. It will also be the main factor in price variation since if you choose crowns made of zirconium the price will generally be double that of mixed ceramic or ceramic-coated metal dental crowns.

- The 4 or 6 dental implants depending on the chosen protocol: it generally represents around 50% of the final price of your “all on 4”. This cost item can also vary because the choice of implant brand will influence the final price. You can opt for the main brand of your dental clinic or choose a “known” brand such as certain major Swiss, German or American brands.

- Necessary services such as consultations or x-rays (3D or not) and options such as tooth and root extractions, bone grafts, deep sedation to be more relaxed on the day of the procedure, this generally counts for 5% of the final price.

- The services necessary on site if you travel and therefore the price of transport and accommodation, approximately 5% of the final price. The season may influence the total price of this budget line but it will mainly be the protocol chosen (the processing time of the first and second phases) which will play a role.

FAQ : main questions about all on 4 dental implants

  • - Which protocol to choose? You will either have to opt for the 2-step protocol or just one. If you choose the two-stage protocol you will have an initial stay of 1 to 3 days to extract your teeth, place your implants and temporary crowns. Then approximately 4 to 6 months later you will return (4 to 7 days) to replace your temporary crowns with permanent crowns, usually zirconium or ceramic coated metal p. The main advantage is not to allow time for bone healing to take place around the implants but to allow time in the laboratory to properly manufacture your dental prostheses. The downside is of course having to make two trips. If you choose the 1-trip protocol, the advantage is of course a time saving with a duration on site of approximately 7 days. You will save a trip and about 1-2 days. In terms of results, opinions are divided because you will in fact have immediate dental crowns fitted, this is what we call the immediate loading protocol. You will have permanent crowns directly and this will be possible thanks to the almost direct manufacturing of “softer” crowns. The duration and hardness are generally quite different from the choice of zirconium dental crowns. In terms of price, the second protocol costs around 15% more because you will mobilize more people in the laboratory, particularly on weekends. Taking into account the economy of the trip, the final price is therefore approximately equivalent.

  • What monitoring is necessary over time? In theory you will not need to return to the dentist in your life since everything is devitalized and there is no risk of infection. In practice it is recommended to have a check-up visit once a year. Through the question of monitoring over time, it is a question of knowing what guarantees the patient has if there is a problem and does he have to come back for “maintenance”? In fact, if this is done correctly, I don't need to come back and check my "all on 4". If there is a problem the dental clinic must replace you due to which it is their fault, it's as simple as that and your “all on 4” installation corresponds to a quote and a contract, quite simply.

How long will my dental implants and crowns last? there may be a guarantee on the lifespan of certain brands of dental implants, for example 20 years for certain well-known brands but in general dentists do not commit to a specific duration. All confirm that general dental hygiene is the key to maintaining your “all on 4” dental implant system. This will of course depend on your lifestyle in general.

Some tips that dental clinics don't tell you*

Generally during the second phase your time on site is optimized. As soon as you finish everything you sign papers with clauses explaining that you will not appeal. With experience we recommend staying a maximum of two days longer than the scheduled time. In fact, we don't feel very good about our teeth just after having crowns fitted, which is normal. Giving yourself one or two days allows the jaws and gums to rest and then scheduling the check-up visit before leaving with a break of a few dozen changes everything about the sensations and possible problems.

Between the two phases in the first protocol you generally have to wait 6 months due to the necessary bone healing around your future implants. This is not completely accurate because in the second protocol no one waits 6 months and permanent crowns are placed directly on you. The famous 4 to 6 months also corresponds in fact to the laboratory manufacturing time of your crowns. If you have opted for zirconium for example, as this is a mineral, it takes several weeks to cut them. So this waiting time is relative and is not an absolute necessity.

Many patients are apprehensive and stressed at the idea of seeing dentists for hours. They are afraid of being in pain, of feeling discomfort, which is quite normal. We even noticed that some people postpone this deadline for years and it is not because of their budget but quite simply by the stress caused by possible panic during dental care. We therefore recommend that you report it in advance, include it in your dental estimate and simply schedule deep sedation or any equivalent. This will act like a sleeping pill without hurting your head and you won't notice the time has passed. For aesthetic issues, if you are afraid of having red cheeks and also feeling bloated, also ask for cold relaxing masks, they work very well.
