Laser eye surgery, also known as refractive laser surgery, includes several advanced ophthalmology techniques designed to correct vision problems such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. The most common modern techniques include LASIK, Femto-LASIK, and SMILE, which use femtosecond laser technology to reshape the cornea and improve visual acuity. Femtosecond laser technology represents a major advancement in refractive surgery. Unlike older mechanical blade techniques, femtosecond lasers create extremely precise corneal incisions using ultra-fast laser pulses. This improves safety, precision, and recovery time. Femtosecond lasers are used in Femto-LASIK and SMILE procedures and are also used in cataract surgery and certain corneal procedures.
LASIK is one of the most common laser vision correction procedures. In LASIK surgery, a thin flap is created on the cornea, the underlying corneal tissue is reshaped using an excimer laser, and the flap is repositioned. Femto-LASIK uses a femtosecond laser instead of a mechanical blade to create the flap, improving precision and safety. LASIK and Femto-LASIK provide rapid visual recovery, often within 24 to 48 hours.
SMILE, or Small Incision Lenticule Extraction, is a newer refractive laser surgery technique that uses a femtosecond laser to create a small lenticule inside the cornea, which is removed through a very small incision. Unlike LASIK, SMILE does not require creating a corneal flap. This technique may reduce dry eye symptoms and improve corneal stability. SMILE is mainly used for myopia and astigmatism.
Candidates for laser eye surgery are typically adults with stable vision for at least one year, no severe dry eye syndrome, no corneal diseases, and no uncontrolled systemic diseases. A detailed ophthalmologic examination including corneal topography and pachymetry is required before determining eligibility. Not all patients are suitable for LASIK or SMILE, and alternative procedures such as PRK may be recommended.
Laser eye surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia with eye drops and takes approximately 10 to 20 minutes for both eyes. Most patients experience improved vision within a few days. Recovery time depends on the technique used, with LASIK offering very fast recovery and SMILE slightly longer recovery but less flap-related risk.
Laser vision correction can significantly reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. Many patients achieve 20/20 vision or better, although results depend on the initial refractive error and corneal thickness. Long-term results are generally stable when the procedure is performed on suitable candidates.
As with any medical procedure, laser eye surgery carries risks including dry eye, glare, halos at night, under-correction, over-correction, infection, or flap complications in LASIK. Serious complications are rare when the procedure is performed in experienced ophthalmology clinics.
The cost of laser eye surgery abroad depends on the technique used such as LASIK, Femto-LASIK, or SMILE, the clinic technology, surgeon experience, diagnostic tests, and follow-up care. Many clinics offer packages including preoperative examination, surgery, medications, and follow-up visits.
Long-term outcomes of laser eye surgery are generally very good with high patient satisfaction rates. Vision correction is usually stable for many years, although natural aging of the eye such as presbyopia may still occur later in life. Regular eye examinations remain recommended after surgery.
